1. Random girl gets eaten by shark while at party.
2. Officer in town begins to put up signs and alert the town of the shark attacks. Tries to get 4th of July celebration canceled.
3.Some men go out to sea to try and catch the shark, with no success.
4. Their boat breaks in the attempt.
5.They kill the shark. (thank god)

What are the conventions of this genre?
The conventions of this genre is a combination of many, there is suspense, action, thriller, fear. All used in a combination to keep the audience at the edge of their seat.

Did this movie meet the conventions?
Yes i find this movie met the conventions, because it had me debating whether or not they were going to kill the shark in the end. It also had me jumping at random moments and constantly wondering what would happen next.

Give a review of the movie
I hated this movie! Not because it was badly made, but simply the entire theme of it. It makes you never want to go to a beach again, and will have me petrified to go into the ocean again. I do not think this is a movie that people who travel alot to the south should watch, it just might want to make you not wanna go on vacation anymore. PS: Horrible job on the shark graphics, then again it was made in the 70′s. Also i see no need to make multiple installments of this film…one is enough!

Batman: The Dark Knight

Identify the five turning points:

1. The joker robs the bank of Gotham
2. Joker begins killing people off, followed by his capture and kidnapping of Harvey and Rachel
3. Batman does not save Rachel he ends up saving Harvey who turns evil because of this and becomes Two Face (the villain)
4. Harvey continues his villain behavior, and later dies
5. Batman must make himself seem like the bad guy, and is seen fleeing the police.

What are the conventions of this genre?
The conventions of this genre are simple. Action, fighting and exploding cars.

Did this movie meet the conventions?
This film met all the conventions of this type of movie gender, it had action, explosives, love, betrayal, basically everything you could want in a movie.

Give a review of the movie
I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone! It is one of those movies that is just great to watch and has something for everyone no matter what you like. It is also great for the older generation who grew up watching the old batman, and can now enjoy this one with even more effects and of course explosives. It is the kind of movie that can be liked by both girls and guys, however i do find that the male gender may enjoy this movie a tiny bit more…mainly because of the explosives.

Office Space

Identify the five turning points:

1) Peter, Michael and Samir are three employees that hate their jobs.

2) Peter goes through an emotional breakdown and his girlfriend reveals to him that she has been cheating on him. She takes him to a hypnosis in an attempt to win back his affection. Shortly after this he meets Joanna a waitress at Chotchkie’s.

3) New advisers have entered the workplace where peter, Michael and Samir work. They end up giving Peter and promotion and fire Samir and Michael.

4) Upset by the unfairness, all three of them decide to unleash Michaels computer virus into the company’s system in an attempt to “steal” money little by little.

5) After the first few weeks the three of them realize that more money is coming in then originally planned. They freak out and Michael decided to take the fall.

6) Their past job ends up burning down, along with the evidence of what they did.

AFTERMATH: Samir and Michael both find new jobs, Peter goes to work in construction.

The conventions of a comedy are:
The comedy film is a type of film that is meant to evoke laughter and humor. Many times it involves a series of funny and random events done by the main character in an attempt to get to a certain goal. Usually the goal is something stupid that is guaranteed to end badly.

Did this movie meet the conventions?
I find that the movie did meet the conventions, because the plan ultimately did blow up in his face. It was something we knew would go wrong from the get go. There were also many funny parts in the movie that allowed for the comical aspect.

Give a review of the movie:
Office Space wasn’t the greatest comedy ever, loved Milton however. It had its funny moments, but then again it was also made in 1999 which has to be taken into consideration that it may not fit our time. Okay, but i have seen funnier.

Phone Booth

Identify the five turning points:

1) A cheating publicist, Stu calls his mistress from the same phone booth every day.

2)After the phone hangs up it ends up ringing again. When he goes to answer it there is a strange man on the other end who claims to know Stu and is secretly watching him.

3) Soon a strip club begins yelling at Stu to get off the phone, but the man on the phone tells him he’ll kill him if he does. While the owner continues to argue the man on the phone shoots him and makes Stu appear as the criminal.

4) The police come, bringing with them Stu’s wife, and mistress. The man on the phone tells Stu that he has no choice but to confess or else he will kill them.

5) Stu ends up apologizing for everything, while the real criminal flees the scene.

AFTERMATH: Stu meets up with the strange man in an ambulance, where the man threatens Stu that he will return if he goes back to his old ways.

What are the conventions of this genre?

Dramatic films usually involve one person, and all the events in the story revolve around this person. It is usually a story line that can happen to anyone, so therefore it is something that is possible in a real world situation. The mood is usually somber, and the scenes are usually dark, and mysterious, leaving space for your mind to wander and try to guess the ending. The story is meant to emotionally effect the audience and usually puts the main character in a situation where it is him against the world.

Did this movie meet the conventions?
Phone booth did meet the conventions of a drama film, mainly because it kept the audience on their toes and definitely didn’t give any clues as to the ending.

Give a review of the movie:

Phone booth was an okay movie, as a drama and as a movie in general. I really liked Collin Farrell’s acting, and found that Kiefer Sutherland was the perfect voice to have over the phone. I did however find the movie to be really short. The story line was okay, however it could have been more creative, i mean a man killing people and threatening someone over a public phone leads the audience to wonder how that is even possible. I found it was somewhat similar to the movie One missed call, which i assume was made as a way to modernize this one? Considering that hardly anyone uses payphones anymore therefore the fear of them through this movie would be lost.

I would maybe recommend this movie to an older male audience. However, Collin Farrell is always a girl’s favorite

The Program

Identify the five turning points:

1- ESU is on a horrible losing track.

2- Camille and Joe meet, and he starts feeling the pressure of having to bring a win to his team.

3-Two team members are suspended.

4- ESU loses an important game. Joe begins to follow his father’s bad habits, drinking, which puts him in hot water with not only football, but Camille as well. They break up and Joe is sent to rehab.

5- The final game is played, where Joe hopes his father will present himself. Turns out he doesn’t.

AFTERMATH: He is back on track and Camille returns in his life.

What are the conventions of this genre?

The conventions of a sports film are:

1. Always starts with the star sports player determined and somewhat forced to bring the team to a victory

2. Boy/girl attraction

3. Team spirit, they train hard

4. Major setback that makes the star player stop or feel like giving up. ( fight, accident, death)

5. Team comes together and realizes that they need to work together to pull through. Usually the star makes a sort of motivation speech.

6. Team wins, or they lose, but come out of it with valuable lessons learned.

Did this movie meet the conventions?

“The Program” meet the conventions in many ways. Joe Kane had to go through alot in order to achieve the goal at hand, which was to win the series. Along with the pressure to bring his team to victory, he had to balance the girl as well. One thing that seemed different about this film was that it followed the stories of every major character on the team as well, in a smaller scale. Each of the characters had to battle there inner demons, and issues.
-> Both Joe and Omar meet girls
->Every major character was working hard and trying to focus on their problems
-> Joe gets sent to rehab while Omar and Alvin compete for Autumn.
-> During the final game the team must put their troubles aside and make a comeback.
-> every player learns a life lesson in one way or another

Give a review of the movie:

I like this movie even though it was a sports film. I am not much of a foot ball lover, and therefore a lot of the technical aspects of the movie was lost to me, however i liked that the movie itself didn’t posses much of the actual football game, so there wasn’t much that i needed to know about the actual game in order to understand it. I would have liked there to have been a little bit more attraction between Joe and Camille. Although the movie followed the typical sports movie format, i really thought that the father would end up coming to the game, and the fact that he didn’t really shook things up a bit.

Along Came Polly

1)Ruben and Lisa get married and they leave for their honeymoon

2) Ruben finds out that Lisa cheats on him with the scuba instructor. Ruben leaves his honeymoon destination, while Lisa remains.

3) Ruben meets Polly, an old school friend and he grows an interest in her.

4) The return of Lisa, she wants to get back together

5) Polly discovers the risk/safety program in Rubens computer and decides to leave him by skipping town.

AFTERMATH: Ruben runs to Polly’s to find that she has left her ferret at home, it is to this which she returns and Ruben convinces her to take him back.

What are the conventions of this genre?

The conventions of a romantic comedy are:

1. The aspect of love at first sight with the boy meeting the girl ( or vice versa)

2. It becomes a challenge to get the opposite partners attention

3. Everything seems to be going well, couple are in love.

4. THE SEPARATOR – usually point where someones past is brought up or one of the two make a big mistake

5. the one that has made the mistake realizes that they cannot live with out the other and they return to fight for what they had.

6. Happy ending where couple are together again.

Did this movie meet the conventions?

“Along Came Polly” is a very typical type of romantic comedy, where a boy gets heart broken and suddenly meets up with someone that used to be in his life (in this case Polly played a minor role) and he suddenly falls in love instantly. The movie met all the conventions of a typical movie of its genre:
1- he does everything to impress Polly, until she gives him a chance to go on a date.
2- Everything is going well until his past comes back to haunt him, his wife.
3-Polly leaves
4- Ruben realises that its Polly that he really wants to be with, not Lisa his wife.
5- Ruben must prove that he really wants to be with Polly. He does so by eating peanuts off the floor, something that truly disgusts him
6- Polly gives in, and they proceed to going on vacation together, where Ruben runs into the same scuba diver that he met on his honeymoon with Lisa.

Movie Review
I am a huge fan of all kinds of movie genres, and romantic comedies are definitely one of my favorites. This movie was the very typical romantic comedy, which actually had more comedy than romance, which was a good thing. It was cheesy, but just enough so that it wasn’t dull or boring. I also liked that it wasn’t a movie that only girls would find interesting, i think that a lot of men would find this movie quite enjoyable as well. I usually tend to find Ben Stiller quite annoying, however in this movie he played the part quite well, and i was not bothered by the fact that i find his acting to be horrible. All in all a good movie, liked how everything was set up and how the scenes flowed.

film appreciation- Intro

Short film: Logorama
Lenght: 16minutes

I found this film to be fairly interesting, everything in it was created using the logos we see everyday. I find that it was created as a way to demonstrate how materialistic our society has become, and how we tend to believe that these things will bring us happiness. Although the film is short, the message is clear and there is a lot of irony that can be found. For example Ronald McDonald is portrayed as the villain in this film and he is only defeated in the end by a logo of Weight Watchers. The end of the film really stuck with me however, when the city is completely consumed by oil. I interpreted this as once oil comes into the picture everything loses value, because it seems like oil is the one thing that everyone is after and it is once again something that will make a country very rich, leading back to the materialistic aspect.

PSA- Create

My creation was complete over the course of four days. It was not very difficult, because i simply had to follow the directions written on the t script and tell my actors what to do and how i wanted them to portray the characters in the PSA. This was not difficult because i found myself to be working with people that co operated and that followed instructions easily. Also since the target audience was teenagers the setting was easily able to fit within our own school, so no need to venture very far in order to accomplish this. The hardest thing to do was getting every scene to line up perfectly with the times written on the t script, this therefore required many takes of the same scene which turned out to be quite annoying at times. Another incontinence was that one of our main scenes took place in a locker bay, and this locker bay had to be empty. This was hard to do because they lock the locker bay between classes and access is not possible, and when the locker bay is unlocked it is during lunch hour where many students tend to fill it.

Sadly our footage was lost due to technical problems with the camcorder. The tape ended up getting stuck in the camcorder and was lost. However we do thank Mr Penning for doing everything he could to try and save it

PSA-Investigate, Design, Plan

For our PSA we decided to choose five topics that we feel need to have social awareness by the public. They are topics that we feel are important, and that can relate to everyone, as well as specifically to teenagers such as ourselves. The topics are the following

1.Drug abuse
2.Body image
3.Bullying
4.Safe sex/abortion
5.Alcohol abuse

In the end we ended up choosing to do bullying. I find that it was a simple choice, simply because people need to understand that this is an ongoing problem in our society. Although this is found in adult society as well as amongst our youth, we choose to focus on them, because they are more likely to experience more of an emotional impact upon their self esteem. Also bullying can be a gateway to any of the other problems that we originally mentioned. If someone is being bullied they can ultimately resort to alchol and drugs. They can also feel that they might be bullied because of how they look and therefore this will result in the having body issue, hoping that by changing themselves the bullying will stop.

Identify

What is the problem?
Bullying has constantly found in our society. No matter what age you are, or what generation you come from every generation has experienced some form of bullying. In today’s day and age bullying tactics have taken a whole new approach to the point where you are not even safe in your own home. With the continous use to cyber bullying and bullying via text message it seems that victims of bullying can never really escape the bullies themselves. Alot of the times the bullies do it because they feel it is the only way they can feel superior and more secure themselves. By putting others down. Sadly this is not only seen in your typical school environment, people have been known to bully even their employees, showing that this is not something that only children and teens suffer from.

Why does this problem exsist?
The problem exsists because we feel that we need to be perfect. Today it is almost impossible to fit in, and everyone has some form of insecurity. Insecurities is what lead us to do things that can sometimes be wrong and un explainable. By putting others down you feel that you yourself are in fact better then they are, it adds to your self esteem. These bullies also eventually get feared and a sense of attention by their peers and this is just something that adds to the problem. They see that they are getting attention, attention they never got before, and they thrive off it. In reality the attention given to them by others is actually encouraging them to continue what they are doing.

How does this problem relate to an area of interaction?
This problem relates to heath and social because it is a social problem, it is something that is going on in our society and it is something that needs to change.

Why is this problem worth solving?
This problem is worth solving, because it will allow people to not be harassed by others. It will allow (in the case of the students) to go to school in an environment where they do not need to feel insecure and bothered by others. Teenagers have enough to deal with already going through their teenage years and they do not need something like this added on to their already confusing lives.

Design Brief

What do you know about the problem?
I am a teenager myself in highschool and i have seen many people, including some of my friends suffer from minor bullying, they were not bullied everyday, but they were teased, and i notticed that this did get to them. I wasn’t really bullied in high school, but i was picked on alot in elementary school. The sense of insecurity is 100 percent true, coming into my first year of high school i was very quiet and shy, and did not like to stand out very much for the fear of being picked on again. Soon you come to realise that you don’t care what people think, and you do what makes you happy.

What do you need to investigate?

I will need to investigate how people deal with the after effects of being bullied, as well as the reasons behind why people are bullied in general. I will have to look at the physiological aspect of how a bully thinks and how they go about choosing their victims. I also need to try and put myself in the shoes of both the bully and the victim since we are filming both sides of the situation.

WEBSITES:
All of the websites will allow information on how bullies react and how they act as well as reasons behind why they choose to do this to others. They will also show the effects bullying can have on people and the ways these victims can reach out and help themselves.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
The newspaper article shows us how common this is, and how people can go to extreme lengths in order to try and escape being bullied. It also gives us a rude awakening that this is not something that should be taken lightly.

TELEVISION AND COMMERCIAL CLIP
Since we are doing a PSA having something in the field of television will be a great asset, because it will allow us to see how others have portrayed the same issue. This will ultimately give us some ideas as well as allow us to find new ways to bring the problem across so that it is new and not something people have seen before.

3. Formulate a design specification

What must the solution to your problem accomplish?
Our solution must open peoples eyes to the extreme measures that are taken by both the bully and the victim in order to either cause harm or escape it. They will hopefully be drawn into the PSA and feel as though they are being bullied as well. It should also allow them to have an emotional connection considering that many people will be able to relate to the bullying problem. It will also raise awareness that there are other means of dealing with this problem and that victims should not turn to other teenage problems as an escape from it. ( ex: drugs, alcohol..etc)

List the specific requirements that must be met by your solution.
My job will be to provide my editor with the right amount of footage in order to fully accomplish the task at hand. To do this, i will have to follow my script writers script perfectly, fitting all the times exactly as they are written in order to attain the required time. I will also need to demonstrate how i would like things to look according the script. I will not have alto of room for input, but I will do my best to put my image for the project through all while following the directions on the t script.

What tests will you use to evaluate if each of the specific requirements have been met?
Our PSA will be shown to the target audience and we will ask them to write up a commentary paper to tell us the impact and thoughts that came into their mind during the viewing.

DESIGN

Select one solution / product and justify your choice

The solution to the problem is to film the various scenes put forth by my script writer in the exact order given following the exact time slots. The product is a PSA.

Create a series of sketches, plans, outlines, etc.

The filming will be contain the two bullies, three bullied victims, and a teacher. It will portray our classmates and will be filmed using the camcorder at school.

Select one design and justify your choice.

Filming the PSA with a camcorder at school will make it easier to convert the files onto the computer since the media department will have more knowledge of this camera and therefore my editor will be able to ask questions and receive answers directly. It will also therefore make it easier to transfer the footage without complications.

PLAN

Create a specific list of logical steps that you will take in order to create your product.

- Investigate different ways that bullies act and how the bullied victims react to these actions

- Receive the T script from my script writer

- Find locations to film each scene

- Find people willing to play the parts in each scene

- Set up dates and times to film that are convenient for everyone involved

- Film all scenes

- Submit to my editor

Create a schedule of deadlines for each step in your project (include estimated lengths of time required to complete each step).

Not much planning will be required in order to film this. Since we are using the school camcorders we will be restricted to filming in school and we will therefore use the time in class to film the scenes. We will be using three media classes that we have until the “director” deadline.

1) CRITERION A: INVESTIGATE
MARK: 5
-> I feel that i explained my problem (how it relates to today, and how people can learn how not to make this mistake again). In addition, i also found a lot of information on the topic at the present time, as well as prior, considering that this was a topic that i was interested in. Other than sites i used, i used books and videos to contribute in a deeper view towards my topic. Choosing a website appeared to be the simplest and easiest way for people to access this information. It was also an easy way to get the message across globally so that not only people in this country would benefit from it.

2) CRITERION B: DESIGN
MARK:5
-> I demonstrated many different designs, such as color layouts, and ways that my site could be set up. I originally came out with four different outlines, however i only ended up choosing one, and even as the project went on that changed a little. The design needed to be revamped, (my choice) because i figured that the new one would be a more straight forward approach and would not confuse the people and they would not have to try and figure out how i was trying to teach them. In other words i did not feel that my other design wasn’t “idiot proof”.

3) CRITERION C: PLAN
MARK: 4
-> My steps were detailed and scheduled accordingly with the flexibility to be changed if desired, which is what happened. You can never predict what will occur in the future, so there fore the schedule does not follow 100 percent with what was originally planned. However, since it was done in such a way the chance to move things around and use other days instead of the ones planned were fairly easy. It also made things more relaxed for me, and put me in an environment where i was able to give 100 percent of my time to the project on days that were not filled up with other events.

4) CRITERION D: CREATE
MARK: 4
My create stage is probably my worst aspect and the one that i am slightly not as happy as i would be with. There was a lot of stuff that i needed to change or remove from my original outline of the site. Regardless of these changes i still proud that i was able to create it as well as i did. Although the original layout was not followed i believe that the site itself still teaches the viewers about the Salem trials in a clear and interesting way, and although it may not seem high tech i am proud with how i was able to use the tools given in a way to make it seem appealing to the people using it.

5) CRITERION E: EVALUATE
MARK: 5
My evaluation will consist of giving surveys as well as recording the scores on the online quiz of 4 people between the ages 12-17. The quiz mark will determine how well they were able to retain the information on the site, the survey will allow them to give their opinion on how the site helped them, as well as how it appealed to them. I will use these results as a way to figure out what aspects of the site i would need to modify in order to make my product a better success.

6) CRITERION F: ATTITUDES IN TECHNOLOGY
MARK: 5
Although i am not as tech savvy as i would like to be i am generally pleased with how i fared in this project. I was able to prove to myself that i am capable to make a website and it can teach people things that interest me. It has in a way encouraged me to further my views in the field of media, and it proves to people that you do not need to be an expert in computers or video cameras to be able to create something like this.

3-Yes, before i didn’t really know anything about it, i had only heard about it once on a tv show, but they did not go into detail. I was fairly surprised at how it all went down, and how innocent people were killed.

5)Yes, the site was clear to understand, i liked how everything was separated, and how the categories were set up. I really liked the encyclopedia page.
